Experience Chicago's lesser known side, Lake Michigan. Our passion is fishing for trophy Salmon and Trout out of downtown Chicago!
While our main passion is fishing, we still enjoy going for cruises downtown to see the Chicago River, fireworks, concerts at Northerly Island, and just relaxing in the playpen. Unlike most charter boats in Illinois, we leave directly out of downtown Chicago. No need to drive 1-2 hours to get to great fishing! Check out our charter packages. From families to the corporate business trip, we are confident we have a package for everyone.
Capt. Brian is a fully licensed and insured USCG captain. What began in small ponds in Indiana, led to a passion of fishing mountain streams out west, boundary waters up north, and the great lakes in our own back yard. He is dedicated to putting his friends and guests of Why Knot on big fish consistently. If the fishing isn't good(which is rare), he will tell you. His goal is to create a memory that lasts a lifetime for his guests.
Why Knot is the perfect boat for your Chicago fishing charter! It has a fully enclosed bathroom, cabin, and a wide open cockpit to fight the salmon and trout awaiting you in Lake Michigan. Why Knot is fully equipped with radar, GPS, and all USCG approved safety gear. At 31ft in length, she is the perfect boat for your next fishing trip.

Fishing has been unreal this fall. The Salmon and Trout have stuck around Chicago all year and are still here! Why Knot is booked up for the year, but the Chicago Fishing Fleet just added a new boat, Storm Warning, a 25 foot unsinkable Boston Whaler Conquest run by Capt. Brian Gentile. His rates and phone number are on our rates page. He'll put you on fish all fall and winter long! Give him a call.
The salmon are still around. We are getting a nice mix of Lake Trout and Salmon right now out of Chicago. We are hoping for a warm September to keep the fish around!
Here are just a few of the pics from the past 2 weeks. Fishing has been great and should continue through the end of August. We are booked up right now, but we will be sure to post any openings or cancellations on our website as soon as anything opens up!
Late happy 4th of July! Fishing was spectactular this weekend with fast action for Kings, Coho, Steelhead, and Lake Trout. We have 1 day left open in July(16th). Book it while you can!
We've been way too busy and forgot to post the reports. Fishing for Salmon has slowed down a bit from the end of May, but still remains good. The Lake Trout have picked back up and kept us plenty busy with Salmon mixed in! Here are a few pics from the past few trips.
Fishing continued to be great over the weekend. It slowed a bit from Friday, but we managed to catch 33 coho, 2 steelhead, and 1 lake trout on Saturday between two trips. Sunday we landed 21 coho and 2 steelhead in two trips. Give us a call. We only have a couple days left open in June. Fishing should continue to be great!
Fishing was on fire today out deep. It took an full day trip to get out to the fish, but the 1 hour ride each way was worth it. We got our Captain's limit and had a blast doing it!
Mother nature has kept us off the lake for a couple weekends, but we were able to get out on Friday for a morning trip and the fishing was very good. The lake trout were very hungry as we limited out in just under 2 hours for our 5 man group.
Thank you to all of our guests on Why Knot this year for making it a successful fishing season! The fishing has slowed down dramatically over the past week and most likely will remain slow until December when the boat will be tucked away in her winter home. We will be opening up our 2016 fishing calendar over the next couple weeks. 2015 was a blast! We look forward to another great year on the water in 2016. Here is a picture from the last fishing trip of the year 2 weeks ago. We couldn't keep the Lakers off the hook!
The weather kept us off Lake Michigan last weekend, but we will be back out this weekend. Fishing was great over Labor Day weekend and hopefully will continue through Halloween! We have limited availability in October. Give us a call to go fishing before the season is over! October can be a great time to fill the freezer with fillets!
Its been too long! Fishing has been good to very good over the past couple weeks. The steady SW winds the past week have brought colder water and bait fish in close to Chicago which has made for much better Salmon fishing than earlier this summer. We have been catching Steelhead, Coho Salmon, King Salmon, and Lake Trout all mixed together. Our only dates left open in August are the 26th, 30th, and 31st. Give us a call to get out on the water before summer is over!
Chicago now has a fall and winter charter fishing option! Capt Brian Gentile is starting to offer fall and winter trips on his 25 ft Boston Whaler. Give him a call! (630)332-0706
Every year the Illinois DNR gives the public a chance to get out and go fishing without the need of a fishing license. This year it is June 17-20th. This is a great chance to get those who have never fished before out on the water and get them hooked on fishing. We still have June 19th open. For Illinois residents this saves you $12 per person and out of state residents $17 per person. Give use call to book your charter on the 19th!
Hopefully this warmer weather sticks around and we are able to get on the spring coho salmon fast a furious! Our schedule is up for April and May. We are already booking trips. Give us a call or text to get the dates you want before they are gone!
Happy new year from our family to yours! We are already counting down the days until Why Knot is back out on Lake Michigan chasing salmon and trout down. Our 2016 calendar is now up and we are starting to get calls for the spring coho fishing. Give us a call and get your date booked before the day you want is gone!
To start thinking about the 2016 fishing season. We now have our spring 2016 schedule up for booking your trip. We have split the rates up for next year to a Spring season and Summer season. Due to shorter running times and fish being close in the spring, we don't have to burn as much gas which equates to more money back in your pocket! Spring is a great time to fill the fish box. Give us a call to get your Chicago fishing charter booked.
Earlier today, one of my guests on Why Knot from this summer sent me a article on the validity of this superstition. While I am not a firm believer in the curse, I have had enough bizarre days on the water with bananas hiding in the cooler to keep my eyes peeled for this ominous fruit. Here is a great article on how the banana became so hated among fishermen. Enjoy!
We are experiencing some of the best fishing of the year right now with a lot of coho salmon, steelhead, and lake trout mixed together. There are a few kings being caught as well. We have this Monday August the 31st open for the morning and afternoon. Give us a call today or tomorrow!
Fishing is really good right now. If you can handle the cooler weather and want to catch a bunch of fish, give us a call. We'll make you a deal you can't resist! There are lots of coho along Chicago's lakefront with an occasional steelhead, lake trout, brown trout, and king salmon mixed in.
Why Knot is all buffed, waxed, painted, and ready to go in the water later this week. She is ready to hunt down those big Salmon, Steelhead, and Trout Lake Michigan holds!
Only 12 days until Why Knot is back in the water! We are ready to start putting you on big Salmon and Trout. Give us a call or text to talk fishing!
