Experience Chicago's lesser known side, Lake Michigan. Our passion is fishing for trophy Salmon and Trout out of downtown Chicago!
Coho are still around! We found them scattered in 140-170 feet of water. As long as the strong winds stay away, fishing should be great for the month of June!
Plenty of hungry LakeTrout out there today. These fish are great on the smoker! Once the lake and winds calm down, we will be back out in the deep blue chasing Salmon as well!
Lake Trout fishing is on fire in 40-50 feet of water. These fish average 8-14lbs with an occasional 20 pounder every couple trips! We caught 14 fish in about 2 hours yesterday. The coho are out deep in 150-300 feet. We've got openings at the end of the month. This spring fishing is a ton of fun!
Since Mother Nature won't let us get out on the lake, we'll share a picture of a good day from last year mid-May. We still have a few openings at the end of the month. Check out the calendar!
Fished for 3 short hours this morning with a friend. Caught 5 brown trout, 1 steelhead, and 1 coho salmon! May fishing is going to be great again this year out of downtown Chicago! Call us to get your trip scheduled!
First trip of the year was a success! 3 man limit of coho salmon and brown trout. It's going to be a great year on Lake Michigan. Dates are starting to book up fast. Get your date before one else books it!
Fishing has been unreal this fall. The Salmon and Trout have stuck around Chicago all year and are still here! Why Knot is booked up for the year, but the Chicago Fishing Fleet just added a new boat, Storm Warning, a 25 foot unsinkable Boston Whaler Conquest run by Capt. Brian Gentile. His rates and phone number are on our rates page. He'll put you on fish all fall and winter long! Give him a call.
The salmon are still around. We are getting a nice mix of Lake Trout and Salmon right now out of Chicago. We are hoping for a warm September to keep the fish around!
Here are just a few of the pics from the past 2 weeks. Fishing has been great and should continue through the end of August. We are booked up right now, but we will be sure to post any openings or cancellations on our website as soon as anything opens up!
Late happy 4th of July! Fishing was spectactular this weekend with fast action for Kings, Coho, Steelhead, and Lake Trout. We have 1 day left open in July(16th). Book it while you can!
While our main passion is fishing, we still enjoy going for cruises downtown to see the Chicago River, fireworks, concerts at Northerly Island, and just relaxing in the playpen. Unlike most charter boats in Illinois, we leave directly out of downtown Chicago. No need to drive 1-2 hours to get to great fishing! Check out our charter packages. From families to the corporate business trip, we are confident we have a package for everyone.
Capt. Brian is a fully licensed and insured USCG captain. What began in small ponds in Indiana, led to a passion of fishing mountain streams out west, boundary waters up north, and the great lakes in our own back yard. He is dedicated to putting his friends and guests of Why Knot on big fish. His goal is to create a memory that lasts a lifetime for his guests.
We have 2 new charter boats for 2017, a 33 foot Baha Cruisers Fisherman and a 25 foot Pursuit Center Console. Both are rigged to be salmon fishing machines! The 33 ft Baha can accommodate up to 6 guests and has a full enclosed head and cabin. The 25 foot Pursuit is an open bow boat without a head and can take up to 4 guests.

August 19th and 20th. Practice day is Friday the 18th. We have all 3 dates open on both boats. This trip books up every year by July. Get your boat reserved now! Check out the rates.
Here's a sneak peak at our new 25ft charter boat. She's almost ready to fish. Putting on the finishing touches the next 2 weeks, then she will be ready to fish!
Happy 2017! We have some big changes in store for Why Knot Charters. We are in the process of purchasing a new boat for this year. We are moving to a 25 foot boat that will be a fishing machine. This will help us be one of the most green charters on Lake Michigan as we will be burning much less fuel per trip. This equates to less cost for you the customer. A win win situation!
We have some big changes coming in 2017, including a smaller boat for groups of 1-3 people and more availability on Fridays. Stay tuned! We hope Santa fills your stocking with plenty of fishing gear!
Every year the Illinois DNR gives the public a chance to get out and go fishing without the need of a fishing license. This year it is June 17-20th. This is a great chance to get those who have never fished before out on the water and get them hooked on fishing. We still have June 19th open. For Illinois residents this saves you $12 per person and out of state residents $17 per person. Give use call to book your charter on the 19th!
Hopefully this warmer weather sticks around and we are able to get on the spring coho salmon fast a furious! Our schedule is up for April and May. We are already booking trips. Give us a call or text to get the dates you want before they are gone!
Happy new year from our family to yours! We are already counting down the days until Why Knot is back out on Lake Michigan chasing salmon and trout down. Our 2016 calendar is now up and we are starting to get calls for the spring coho fishing. Give us a call and get your date booked before the day you want is gone!
To start thinking about the 2016 fishing season. We now have our spring 2016 schedule up for booking your trip. We have split the rates up for next year to a Spring season and Summer season. Due to shorter running times and fish being close in the spring, we don't have to burn as much gas which equates to more money back in your pocket! Spring is a great time to fill the fish box. Give us a call to get your Chicago fishing charter booked.
Earlier today, one of my guests on Why Knot from this summer sent me a article on the validity of this superstition. While I am not a firm believer in the curse, I have had enough bizarre days on the water with bananas hiding in the cooler to keep my eyes peeled for this ominous fruit. Here is a great article on how the banana became so hated among fishermen. Enjoy!
We are experiencing some of the best fishing of the year right now with a lot of coho salmon, steelhead, and lake trout mixed together. There are a few kings being caught as well. We have this Monday August the 31st open for the morning and afternoon. Give us a call today or tomorrow!
